Your pre-flight timeline

This covers the full process for flying a cat or small dog in-cabin from Heathrow to Abu Dhabi on Etihad Airways β€” the only airline currently offering this route in-cabin. Work through it in order; most steps depend on the one before.

Vaccinations and breed restrictions differ slightly between dogs and cats β€” pick yours below to see what applies.

What your dog needs

Core vaccinations: distemper, parvovirus, infectious canine hepatitis and leptospirosis β€” alongside the rabies vaccination required for all pets.

Breed check: the UAE bans import of several breeds, including Pit Bull types, Rottweiler, Doberman, Boxer, several Mastiff types, the Japanese Tosa, and their crosses. These cannot travel to the UAE on any airline, so confirm your dog isn't on a restricted list before you book anything.

What your cat needs

Core vaccinations: feline panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis and calicivirus β€” alongside the rabies vaccination required for all pets.

Breed check: no cat breed is currently restricted by the UAE or Etihad. If you have a flat-faced (brachycephalic) breed such as a Persian, it's still worth a quick call to Etihad to confirm β€” airlines are often more cautious with brachycephalic breeds generally.

4+ months before travel

Microchip your pet

An ISO 11784/11785-compliant microchip has to be fitted before anything else on this list β€” it must go in before the rabies vaccination, and the number needs to match exactly across every document that follows.

At least 21 days before travel

Core vaccinations and rabies

Alongside rabies, your pet needs its core vaccinations up to date β€” the exact list differs for dogs and cats, see the β€œDog vs Cat” panel above. The rabies vaccination itself must be given more than 21 days before travel, after the microchip is fitted, and your pet must have been at least 12 weeks old when vaccinated. Boosters need to stay current β€” within 12 months of travel.

Good news for UK owners: because the UK is on the UAE's low-risk rabies list, your pet does not need a rabies antibody (titer/FAVN) blood test, unlike pets travelling from many other countries. Worth a quick double-check that this hasn't changed before you book, as the list is reviewed periodically.

Within 14 days of travel

Flea, tick and worm treatment

Your vet treats your pet for external parasites (commonly fipronil or permethrin) and worms (commonly a praziquantel-based product), and records it on the health certificate.

4
At least 7 days before travel β€” earlier is safer

Book your pet's seat with Etihad

Etihad is currently the only airline flying pets in-cabin from Heathrow, and only to Abu Dhabi. Submit their pet travel booking form at least 7 days ahead of your flight β€” cabin pet spaces are limited, so the earlier you book, the better. Your pet and carrier together must weigh 8kg or less, with the carrier no larger than 40 Γ— 40 Γ— 22cm, soft-sided, well-ventilated and leak-proof. Minimum age to fly is 16 weeks, and the travelling passenger must be 18 or older. Check the β€œDog vs Cat” panel above for breed restrictions before you book.

5
Once your flight is confirmed

Apply for the UAE import permit

Apply through the UAE Ministry of Climate Change & Environment's e-services portal (eservices.moccae.gov.ae). You'll need your pet's vaccination record with microchip number, species, breed, colour and date of birth, plus your flight details. Fees and validity windows are set by MOCCAE directly β€” confirm the current figures on the portal when you apply, as they're periodically revised.

6
Apply around 7 working days before travel

Book your UK Export Health Certificate

This is UK certificate 3926, applied for online through APHA's EHC Online service with an Official Veterinarian (OV) of your choice. Your OV examines your pet within 24 hours of travel and signs the certificate, which is then valid for 10 days. APHA can turn this around in as little as 1 working day if you're booking close to your flight, but 7 working days is the standard window.

7
1–2 days before travel

Final checks

Your OV's clinical exam and certificate signing happens here. Check that every document β€” vaccination record, export health certificate, import permit β€” shows the exact same microchip number. Pack the carrier with an absorbent liner and something familiar-smelling from home.

8
Travel day

Heathrow to Abu Dhabi

Arrive early and check in through Etihad's pet travel process β€” your pet's carrier travels with you under the seat in front, not in the hold. On arrival in Abu Dhabi, your import permit and export health certificate clear your pet through customs; with everything in order, there's no quarantine.

Guide FAQs

Faq Image
Do I have to follow this exact process, or can requirements change?
Requirements are set by Etihad and UAE authorities, not by us, and they are reviewed periodically. This guide reflects the latest guidance as of its last-updated date above, but we'd always recommend double-checking the live requirements with Etihad and MOCCAE before you book, especially if your travel date is a few months out.
What if my dog's breed is on the restricted list?
Then unfortunately no airline will be able to fly your dog to the UAE, in-cabin or in the hold β€” breed restrictions are set by UAE import law, not by the airline. If that's the case for you, get in touch and we'll talk through what other options might exist.
I've started the DIY process but it's getting overwhelming β€” can you take over partway through?
Yes β€” tell us what's already done (vaccinations, microchip, bookings) and we'll pick up from there rather than starting again. Just get in touch via our packages page or contact us directly.
